If you live in Wisconsin, chances are you’ve probably heard that Emerald Ash Borers have been making quite a feast of our ash trees. Typically, ashes grow healthy and happy for decades, with a network of trunks and characteristic branches. But when an emerald ash borer (metallic green and about a ½ inch long) chooses a tree as its victim, it bores through the bark and into the wood to lay its eggs, leaving a D-shaped hole in the bark once it emerges in the spring. The larvae (which can grow up to 1½ inches long) hatch and begin to feed on the meat of the tree while being fed on by woodpeckers, further damaging the tree. The burrowing of the larvae underneath the layer of bark creates fascinating arrays of tunnel designs called ‘galleries,’ like the image pictured above. The larvae begin feeding from the branches at the top of the tree meaning the most common first symptom of an infestation is a dieback in the tree canopy.
Unfortunately for a lot of Ash trees, if left untreated, they will die. This is a fact, not an opinion. To combat, we use Tree-Age trunk injections that move rapidly into the vascular system of the tree eradicating any burrowing beetles or larvae. While we have unfortunately had to cut down several ash trees too far gone to treat, as of this date, we have not lost a single tree that we have treated with Tree-Age. Most trees we are seeing in the area are currently infected with the shimmery green invaders, but there is still time to save them!
